This startup is fighting India’s fake news problem on WhatsApp


<p>MetaFact is hoping that AI might help mitigate misinformation spread in multiple languages and through text, photo, and video on the encrypted messaging service.</p><br /><p><span class="dropcap">W</span><span class="bolded">hen a group</span> of five men offered a cookie to a young girl in a village in the western Indian state of Maharashtra last July, they didn&#x2019;t know the gesture would cost them their lives. Across the country, rumors of kidnappers had been circulating on the free messaging service WhatsApp, and when villagers saw the unfamiliar men speaking to the child, they assumed foul play.
