Why we should stop feeling guilty about doing things that we enjoy

Many of us have ‘guilty pleasures’ that we wouldn’t give up but would rather keep secret. According to this cultural anthropologist, indulging in them can be good for us.

TV. Movies. Baked Goods. Financial services. Shopping. Comic books. Soft drinks. Pizza. Video games. Wine. Fast food. Technology. Candy. Gambling. These are just a few of the topics I’ve studied over the past 18 years in which the concept of “guilty pleasure” proved central. As an anthropologist working in consumer and audience research, I’d ask people, “Why do you eat it? Drink it? Watch it? Do it?” Again and again, the response would (often sheepishly) be, “Well . . . it’s a guilty pleasure.”

Tech leaders in pursuit of self-optimization are turning to the Oura ring—a sleep tracker endorsed by Jack Dorsey.

Last December, Jack Dorsey infamously went off the grid. Returning to work after a career break? Here are some tips for tackling self-doubt

It’s normal to feel a little nervous when you return to work after taking a career break. But there are things you can do to push past those doubts.

A 2013 British study from the Association of Accounting Technicians found that women on maternity leave begin to lose confidence in their ability to return to the working world just 11 months after giving birth (keep in mind the average maternity leave in the United Kingdom is one year). The report said: “Experts found millions of new moms cope admirably with the dramatic change in focus that comes with caring for a new arrival. But around the 11-month mark they are struck by a confidence crisis sparked by the feeling they are no longer capable of cutting it in the professional world. Fifty-seven percent say they no longer have the confidence or feel capable enough to re-join the industry and take up the same level of responsibility as before they had children.”
