3 ways that you can support sucking extra carbon from the air

If you’re looking for a way to put your cash into helping the climate crisis, there are several new companies that let you pay for offsets that involve sequestering carbon in rocks, trees, and the soil.

Transforming the entire economy to get to net zero emissions, something that scientists say is necessary to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, will require massive and complicated transformations of nearly every aspect of society. But if you want to act on climate change now as an individual—and you’re already doing the main work of pressuring the government and companies to make systemic changes—it’s possible to subscribe to suck carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and turn it into a rock that can be stored underground.

Motorola is building a new kind of walkie-talkie for first responders

The higher-tech device could free up dispatchers for true emergencies—because you’d rather have a person answering 911 calls than looking up license plates.

Smartphones are handy devices, but they don’t do much good in emergencies. If a hurricane knocks down a few cell towers, or forest fires tear through the already thin infrastructure of remote areas, cell-phone communication can simply disappear. Which is why, to this day, first responders like police officers and firefighters rely on LMR, or “land mobile radios” (aka walkie-talkies). Walkie-talkies have a range of a few miles and are used to coordinate everything from routine information requests to dispatch to deep-disaster response inside a crumbling building.

The Ocean Cleanup project is now cleaning plastic out of rivers to stop it from getting to the ocean

Failure will hurt more than you think. Here’s how to learn from it anyway

Failure is often glorified and touted as a lesson, but it’s still a very difficult thing to experience.

There’s a reason why the Pursuit of Happiness—the true story starring Will Smith about a down-on-his-luck salesman and single dad who finds his way to the top—was a hit. We like to romanticize failure. We root for the underdog at the movies, and we revere the billionaire who started as a college dropout. From a distance, failure seems noble. Pixelbook Go: a happy medium between budget and high-end Chromebooks

It’s far from the cheapest Chromebook on the market. In that time, the vehicles contributed more to the increase in global CO2 emissions than airlines, trucks, or heavy industry, according to an analysis by the International Energy Agency. Even if we add nearly 150 million electric cars to the road by 2040, if SUV ownership grows at its current rate, they’ll offset that entire emissions reduction.
